Kate Levine is a teacher, artist, and designer. She received her Master's degree in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Bachelor's degree in English from Oberlin College. She also studied three-dimensional design at the School of Applied Arts (Allg. Kunstgewerbeschule) in Basel, Switzerland. Her work encompasses many media, ranging from pencil-on-paper to digital graphics–including web design. As an educator, her prime objective is to develop visually enriching instructional tools that support learning across the content areas while transcending standard disciplinary boundaries. She is currently producing a four-unit curriculum entitled
Hard Looks (see
Pattern excerpt), which is designed to build observational skills. Based on the principles of
teaching for understanding, this program consists of a progressive series of videos and guided exercises that help students to develop not just the visual acuity to take in the world but also the critical acumen to evaluate what they see.
